Uttarakhand has collected 798 tonnes of waste across the four Char Dham destinations during the ongoing pilgrimage season. This initiative aims to enhance sanitation and reduce plastic waste in the Himalayan pilgrimage circuit. The campaign encompasses Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, with local bodies managing waste at each location.
The government's focus is on scientific waste disposal and recycling to ensure a cleaner, more sustainable pilgrimage experience. At Kedarnath, 32 tonnes of solid waste, including 20 tonnes of plastic, were collected. Sulabh International managed sanitation on the pedestrian route, collecting an additional 270 tonnes.
Badrinath has seen 393 tonnes of waste collected, with 161 tonnes being dry waste. Efforts are underway to compact solid waste and auction the collected plastic. Gangotri reported 98 tonnes of waste, recycling 22 tonnes of plastic for ₹55,000 revenue and producing compost.
Yamunotri has collected 4.85 tonnes of plastic waste, with specific amounts gathered from market areas and disposed of. Continued participation from pilgrims and traders is deemed essential for ongoing waste reduction and recycling success.
