Summary
- Once barren hills now host orchards after decades of ecological restoration.
- Significant government funding transformed soil erosion-plagued county.
- Bird species have increased, indicating a healthier ecosystem.

Changting county in Fujian province has undergone a dramatic ecological transformation, turning barren, erosion-prone hills into fertile land. Over two decades ago, local farmers like Ma Xuemei began the arduous task of greening the degraded slopes, facing immense challenges from compacted, lifeless soil and heavy rainfall.
The county's severe soil erosion, a consequence of historical deforestation, had degraded farmland and impoverished rural communities. Recognizing this, Xi Jinping prioritized soil erosion control during his tenure as a provincial leader, making multiple visits and securing substantial financial and policy support for restoration efforts.
Under this initiative, annual government funding increased significantly, enabling sustained ecological development. This commitment allowed for innovative approaches, such as planting Bahia grass to stabilize soil before introducing shrubs and trees.
Today, the hillsides are covered with fruit orchards, providing new income sources and attracting former residents back to the area. The improved environment is also reflected in the flourishing wildlife, with bird diversity significantly increasing, serving as a clear indicator of the ecosystem's recovery.
