Chandigarh Fights Winter Smog with Coordinated Plan
7 Nov
Summary
- All major departments unite for a coordinated winter air quality plan.
- Mechanized sweepers, sprinklers, and anti-smog guns deployed citywide.
- Environmental compensation to be imposed on dust-polluting activities.
As winter approaches, Chandigarh administration has initiated a comprehensive, coordinated plan across departments to tackle escalating air pollution concerns. The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) has detailed measures for the municipal corporation, police, engineering, and education departments. These include the strategic deployment of mechanized road sweepers, water sprinklers, fogging machines, and anti-smog guns, with four sweepers already covering 240 km daily.
The identified winter pollution sources comprise calm conditions, temperature inversion, festival-related traffic, firecrackers, and biomass burning. To combat this, regulated use of new machinery is critical from November 2026 to March 2027, with strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and CPCC guidelines. Daily logs, GPS records, and deployment at hotspots will ensure accountability.
Preventive actions also involve the Traffic Police conducting awareness campaigns and the education department engaging students through various activities to foster environmental consciousness. Furthermore, environmental compensation will be imposed on activities causing dust pollution, with agencies failing to comply facing penalties as per CPCC-approved SOPs.
