The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation recently established a formal agreement with its door-to-door waste collectors through a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This significant step was taken to integrate and regulate the services provided by these essential workers, particularly within commercial zones.
The MoU, facilitated by the Medical Officer of Health's office, aims to bolster accountability and efficiency in the city's waste management system, aligning with the goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission. It clearly outlines the responsibilities concerning scientific waste collection, mandatory waste segregation at the source into wet, dry, and hazardous categories, and the critical importance of maintaining sanitation standards.
An awareness session was conducted to educate participants on the necessity of waste segregation and the safe handling of municipal solid waste. To support these efforts, Swachhata kits containing masks, gloves, and cleaning tools were distributed to the sanitation workers, prioritizing their safety and well-being. Mayor Saurabh Joshi emphasized the critical role of source segregation and urged both commercial establishments and residents to comply fully with waste management norms.
