Dumping Fines? Clean the City Instead!
12 Mar
Summary
- Violators can clean city instead of paying fines.
- Community sanitation work replaces financial penalties.
- Initiative aims to promote civic responsibility and cleanliness.

In a pioneering move, Chandigarh's Municipal Corporation now permits individuals caught dumping waste to perform community sanitation instead of paying fines. This program targets offenders facing financial or personal constraints, allowing them to undertake cleaning duties under supervision.
Area health supervisors will assign tasks like waste lifting or sweeping. The initiative has already seen violators from Sector 25 and Sector 8 opt for sanitation work over fines totaling thousands of rupees. These cases are pending final approval after documentation and verification of their service.
MC Commissioner Amit Kumar emphasized the initiative's aim is not to offer an easy escape but to instill a sense of responsibility. Strict enforcement of waste management laws continues, with a zero-tolerance approach to littering and illegal dumping.
The goal is to sensitize citizens to the importance of cleanliness by having them actively participate in sanitation. This approach seeks to reduce unpaid challans and bolster the Swachh Bharat Mission for a cleaner Chandigarh.
