Dadumajra Dump: 20m Trash Mounds Plague Chandigarh
11 Jun
Summary
- A 20-meter high mound of legacy waste emits intolerable stench.
- Residents endure swarms of flies and prepare meals near refuse.
- Court-appointed commissioner details severe environmental lapses.

Advocate Tanu Bedi, a court-appointed commissioner, has submitted a five-page report detailing severe environmental and operational failures at the Dadumajra dumping site. The inspection revealed that while the entrance area was masked with mist to control odor, the core of the site features massive mounds of legacy solid waste, emitting a powerful stench.
The report highlights a critical issue: a 20-meter-high accumulation of trash, equivalent to the height of the surrounding wall, lies at the dumping ground's rear. This contrasts sharply with the relatively cleaner front section.
Beyond environmental concerns, the report underscores the humanitarian impact. Residents adjacent to the site endure swarms of flies, with the commissioner noting the distress of people preparing meals in such conditions. The report emphasizes how the situation compromises the dignity of individuals living next to the city's refuse.
Attempts by the municipal corporation to cover scattered garbage with soil were noted, though the material used did not resemble proper bio-soil or refuse-derived fuel. A stakeholder meeting was held to expedite waste removal, and an aerial video confirmed the stark contrast between the site's front and rear.
A cleanup operation was scheduled for completion by June 5, with a symbolic plantation drive planned for World Environment Day. The Punjab and Haryana high court is set to hear the matter further on July 16.
