The National Trust has successfully acquired 138 hectares of land adjacent to Dorset's Cerne Abbas Giant, meeting its £330,000 fundraising target in just 60 days. The appeal attracted donations from supporters in 20 countries, contributing to a larger £2 million raised for the area known as Giant's Lair.
This vital acquisition will allow for the restoration of chalk grassland, the planting of new woodlands, and the creation of diverse habitats to support species adaptation to climate change. The land, designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is home to 36 butterfly species.
Plans are underway to recruit a local ranger and collaborate with organizations like Butterfly Conservation. In early summer, the Cerne Abbas Giant itself will be re-chalked with the assistance of appeal donors. The land purchase also opens new avenues for archaeological research into the Giant's origins, believed to date back to the Early Medieval period.
