Cauvery River Choked by Textile Effluents
14 Feb
Summary
- Untreated textile effluents contaminate Sunnambu Odai and River Cauvery.
- Industrial waste pollutes water during daytime, not just at night.
- Sewage treatment plant project for Vairapalayam is yet to commence.

Untreated effluents from textile processing units are being discharged into Sunnambu Odai, a drain that merges with the River Cauvery, according to residents of Vairapalayam. This pollution is not limited to nighttime but occurs openly during the day, releasing toxic chemicals and hazardous substances. The contamination threatens the Cauvery River, a crucial source of drinking water and irrigation for delta districts.
Besides Sunnambu Odai, other drainage channels like Perumpallam and Pichaikaranpallam are also reportedly receiving industrial waste and domestic sewage. While Chief Minister M. K. Stalin announced the establishment of sewage treatment plants within Corporation limits on March 13, 2024, residents state that these projects have yet to materialize, allowing pollution to continue unabated.
