A caravan park owner in Somerset has been ordered to pay over £116,000 in fines after admitting to disturbing land vital for bird breeding. John Holland, aged 59, faced charges under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
The court heard that over a four-year period, Holland placed more than 90 caravans and 40 vehicles on 1.2 hectares of grassland. This land is designated as a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and serves as a breeding ground for birds.
Holland's actions, which involved "cramming" vehicles onto the habitat, were described as showing "blatant contempt" for the protected environment. The prosecution was brought by Natural England, highlighting the severity of the ecological damage.
