The 2026 Campus Bird Count (CBC) successfully concluded, drawing participation from 395 campuses worldwide. This citizen-science initiative, integrated with the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), recorded 2,382 eBirders, documented 558 bird species, and generated 20,874 checklists. This global effort highlights the biodiversity present even in urbanized educational environments.
In Goa, 12 institutions actively participated in the CBC. These campuses collectively recorded 110 bird species, representing almost 40% of the state's total GBBC documentation. Carmel College led the state's campus count with 71 species, followed by Goa University with 60 species. These findings underscore the role of campuses as vital biodiversity refugia.
Common species like the brahminy kite were found across all participating Goan campuses, indicating widespread adaptability. The initiative not only documents biodiversity but also aims to cultivate ecological literacy and a sense of environmental responsibility among college students during their formative years.
