Calgary Zoo Takes Bird Flu Precautions
23 Oct
Summary
- Avian flu confirmed within 200 kilometres of the zoo.
- Visitors must use foot baths before entering bird exhibits.
- Zoo implements measures to protect animal health and well-being.

Federal officials have confirmed the presence of avian flu in the Calgary area, prompting the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo to enact precautionary measures. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency verified highly pathogenic avian influenza within a 200-kilometre radius of the zoo. In response, the zoo has established foot baths at the entrance of its bird exhibits.
These new protocols require all visitors, staff, volunteers, and contractors to utilize the foot baths before accessing areas such as the Penguin Plunge and various aviaries. This step is being taken "out of an abundance of caution" to ensure the health and well-being of the zoo's animal inhabitants. The zoo has stated that its birds will continue to receive outdoor access, provided weather conditions are suitable.
