Help Battle Flooding Balsam in Burrs Park
11 May
Summary
- Himalayan balsam removal event scheduled for May 23.
- Plant causes floods and threatens native species.
- Volunteers of all ages with no experience welcome.

Residents are invited to a special event on May 23 to help eradicate Himalayan balsam from Burrs Country Park. This invasive plant, introduced to the UK in 1839, poses a significant threat by blocking waterways and increasing flood risks.
Its rapid growth also crowds out native plant species, impacting biodiversity. The plant, which flowers from July to November, can spread hundreds of seeds up to 7m (23 ft) with floating capabilities lasting two years.
Despite its shallow roots causing soil erosion, the nectar-rich flowers are beneficial to bees. Environmental authorities are taking control measures nationwide due to the plant's ecological impact.
Removal methods include uprooting young plants, trimming, or pulling out the entire plant with its root system. Volunteers are needed during the school half-term holiday, and no prior experience is necessary.
