According to current UK legislation, anyone burning unauthorized fuel or creating smoke from their chimney in a smoke control area could face penalties of up to £300. This is precisely why it's crucial for homeowners to understand exactly what they can and cannot burn.
Fortunately, there are specific logos to watch for that indicate whether the fire fuel will be approved. Jonny Smith, a Fire Risk Assessment Specialist at Crusader Fire, explains that many people are unaware that the materials they're burning could be breaking the law. It's not just about smoke, as burning the wrong materials can release toxic fumes that damage air quality and trigger serious breathing problems.
Councils are now enforcing these rules much more strictly, especially during the winter months. Within "smoke control zones" covering most urban areas across England, only approved fuels such as kiln-dried logs or briquettes bearing the 'Ready to Burn' logo can be used, and only in DEFRA-approved stoves or wood burners.
