Buccaneer Metropark, a 266-acre property formerly used as a campground and festival site, is nearing completion and is expected to open to the public this month. The Ashtabula County Metroparks, in collaboration with the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, acquired the land in March 2025, with grant funding efforts beginning in 2021.
Development has focused on enhancing the park's natural features and amenities. Grants from the County League and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources have provided fishing equipment and restocked the park's lake. Metroparks crews are also reworking existing structures into open-air pavilions and a lodge, with three buildings undergoing renovation to be reservable by the public.
Additionally, the park will feature multipurpose trails built in partnership with the Ohio Horseman's Council, suitable for horseback riding and hiking. Future plans include a paved ADA trail around the pond with accessible fishing points. The lodge, equipped with heating, will be available for year-round use for various events and gatherings, promoting outdoor enjoyment.
Buccaneer Metropark is poised to offer a wide range of activities, including hiking, bird watching, biking, walking, naturalist programs, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The park will provide access to Mill Creek, and will permit hunting with a permit, dog walking, and geocaching.
