A significant historical site, the 4,000-year-old Fire Beacon Cairn near Crowcombe on the Quantock Hills, has suffered damage due to the removal of rocks. The vandalism was observed on two separate occasions by a landowner and subsequently reported to local rangers and Historic England.
Ian Porter, the head ranger for the Quantock Hills, voiced his disappointment, highlighting the monument's immense historical value. He stressed that the cairn is not merely a pile of stones but a crucial historical landmark that reveals the ceremonial importance of the landscape in ancient times. This site is legally protected as it is one of approximately 50 such monuments located on the hills, making any disturbance to the rocks illegal.
