Broadway's medians are being revitalized into a continuous five-mile wildlife corridor known as The Great Green Way. The Broadway Mall Association is replanting these urban spaces with native species to create interconnected habitats for birds, bees, and other wildlife.
Restoration efforts began in 2024 with pilot projects. As of 2026, 12 malls have been restored, with a dedicated pollinator garden established at 150th Street to strengthen links between Central Park and Riverside Park.
Native plants are chosen for their ecological benefits, including providing food and habitat, improving soil health, absorbing stormwater, and storing carbon. Each mall is treated as a unique ecosystem, with plantings tailored to local conditions.
By the end of 2026, several more restorations are expected. The ultimate goal is to restore all 83 Broadway malls, creating a resilient green corridor that cools streets, cleans air, and offers accessible green space in neighborhoods.
