13 Mar
Summary
- Sir Brian May expected cream daffodils but received bright yellow ones.
- A supply error led to the planting of the wrong daffodil variety.
- May initially felt disappointed but now finds the yellow flowers fitting.

Sir Brian May, renowned guitarist for the band Queen, recently participated in planting 3,000 daffodil bulbs with the intention of creating a specific visual effect. The vision was for a serene landscape of "Ice Follies" daffodils, a cream variety with pale yellow trumpets, intended to harmonize with the limestone walls of St James's Church in Elstead, Surrey, and serve as a picturesque backdrop for wedding photos.
However, a supply error meant that the bulbs planted were of the "Golden Aura" variety, resulting in a carpet of bright yellow flowers. Sir Brian expressed initial disappointment upon realizing the mistake. Despite this, he has come to appreciate the unexpected outcome, noting on his website that the "very traditional, 'natural' narcissus flowers" look splendid and complement the existing natural clumps of daffodils around the trees.
The village community, alongside Sir Brian, has decided to embrace the cheerful, bright yellow display. The vicar, Rev Hannah Moore, blessed the flowers on Friday afternoon. The unexpected daffodil choice has become a point of local interest, with the vibrant blooms now a feature of the Elstead Church Green in the spring sunshine.
