Rio's Trash: A R$27 Billion Untapped Economic Goldmine
14 Jun
Summary
- Rio de Janeiro generates 17,000 tonnes of waste daily.
- Brazil loses R$27 billion annually from unmanaged waste.
- Circular economy could create 7 million jobs by 2030.

Rio de Janeiro, a major Southern Hemisphere city, faces the daily generation of 17,000 tonnes of waste. This significant environmental challenge also represents a substantial economic opportunity. Adalberto Maluf, National Secretary for Environment, highlighted that Brazil loses R$27 billion annually by discarding valuable materials, while municipalities incur R$45 billion in waste management costs.
Less than a third of recyclable potential is currently recovered in Brazil. Maluf suggests reviewing contracts and implementing performance-based remuneration for sorted materials and landfill diversion. Bernardo Ornelas from Comlurb pointed to Rio's Ecoparque do Caju as a national benchmark, transforming waste into biogas, organic compost, and even food for human consumption.
Florianópolis aims for 90% of its organic waste to avoid landfills by 2030, offering public courses like vermicomposting. Maluf advocates for decentralized solutions over complex, large-scale projects. A 2025 MMA study indicates the circular economy could create up to 7 million jobs in Brazil by 2030, emphasizing the need for public policies and enhanced public awareness through education and media.
