Brazil's Gentle Giants Vanish on Roads

In Brazil, a concerning trend has emerged where 766 giant anteaters were found dead along highways between 2017 and 2020. This alarming increase in mortality is directly linked to an agricultural expansion that necessitates clearing anteater habitats and constructing new roads. The country's gentle giants, naturally slow-moving, are frequently struck by vehicles, leading to a significant decline in their population and leaving numerous pups orphaned.

Photographer Fernando Faciole spent three years documenting this crisis, capturing both the harsh reality of road collisions and the intensive efforts in rehabilitation centers. He traveled through Brazil's Cerrado and Pantanal, witnessing the profound impact of human development on this species. His work highlights the critical need for improved infrastructure.

Faciole's documentation efforts were challenging, involving tracking down deceased animals and capturing the delicate nature of orphaned pups in rehabilitation. He also faced technical difficulties, such as the anteaters' camouflage and nocturnal habits, making them hard to photograph.
