Bovine TB: Farmers' Devastating Losses Mount

Bovine TB (bTB) continues to inflict significant emotional and financial hardship on farmers and their families in Northern Ireland. The disease's impact ranges from the deep personal loss of cattle to substantial financial strain.

This year, the cost associated with bTB is projected to exceed £70 million, with over three-quarters of this amount allocated to compensating farmers for their lost animals. To address this complex issue, a 12-week consultation, launched in early July, is gathering public opinion on potential wildlife interventions.

Options under consideration include culling, testing, vaccinating, or removing badgers, which are implicated in the disease's spread. This consultation is a key component of the Blueprint for Bovine TB Eradication, a strategy launched last year aiming for comprehensive, evidence-based solutions.

The consultation, which runs until September 25th, highlights the multifaceted approach needed, focusing on cattle, people, and wildlife. While badger intervention is a sensitive topic with diverse viewpoints, the department emphasizes there is no predetermined option, seeking input to combat this significant animal health challenge.
