Boomtown Pioneers Eco-Friendly Main Stage
14 Aug
Summary
- UK's first festival main stage uses green hydrogen fuel.
- By-products of the hydrogen power are only water and heat.
- Festival organizers reduced carbon footprint by 98% in seven years.

Boomtown festival in Hampshire has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first in the UK to feature a main stage entirely powered by green hydrogen. The HydroXL stage, which opened on Friday, employs generators that convert hydrogen into electricity through fuel cells, supplemented by self-charging HPU batteries. Organizers emphasize that this technology produces only water and heat as by-products, ensuring zero carbon emissions, fumes, and noise.
Ruby Handy, the festival's operations manager, expressed the organization's commitment to sustainability and pioneering new energy sources within the festival industry. Following a successful smaller-scale trial last year, the technology has been scaled up for the main stage, which can accommodate up to 20,000 people. The adult-only festival is currently hosting a record 77,000 attendees.
Despite the focus on innovation, Boomtown is also contending with environmental challenges. A heat warning and drought in the region have led to issues with dust, particularly due to the festival's location in the chalk and limestone areas of the South Downs. Festivalgoers have been advised to take precautions, including wearing face coverings, sunscreen, and staying hydrated. The festival has also implemented a ban on camping stoves and barbecues to mitigate fire risks.
Boomtown has a strong track record in environmental responsibility, having reduced its carbon footprint by 98% over the past seven years. Additional sustainability initiatives include The Reparium, where attendees can get items repaired, and an Energy Green tent offering workshops on building personal solar panels.
