Court Orders Safe School Transport Amidst Tiger Reserve Wild Attacks
4 Apr
Summary
- Court directed identification of schools prone to wild attacks within seven days.
- A daily 6 am-6 pm safe transport for students, escorted by a rapid response team.
- An advanced life support ambulance to be permanently stationed at a local health centre.

In a significant ruling, the Bombay high court's Kolhapur bench has mandated immediate safety measures for students in areas surrounding the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR). The court has directed authorities to identify schools vulnerable to wild animal attacks within a seven-day period.
To mitigate risks, a daily safe school transport system will be deployed from 6 am to 6 pm, featuring an escort by a dedicated rapid response team. This measure aims to protect the over 500 students who daily face life-threatening risks, with some having to walk considerable distances through areas prone to wildlife encounters.
Further enhancing emergency preparedness, the court has ordered that an advanced life support ambulance be permanently stationed at the Shittur-Warun primary health centre in Kolhapur district. This ensures prompt medical aid is available for the community and students in the STR, an area known for its significant wildlife population including tigers, leopards, and Indian Gaurs.
