An escalating bluetongue outbreak is placing immense pressure on farmers, compounding existing difficulties such as drought. Zoe Lloyd, an animal health and welfare scientist, highlighted the "devastating impact" the disease can have on livestock health and welfare, as well as on farmers' mental health and decision-making processes.
"We cannot stress enough the seriousness of the situation," Lloyd stated, urging farmers to consult their veterinarians about vaccination as soon as possible. A Defra spokesperson acknowledged the incredibly difficult time faced by frontline animal keepers and vets, affirming that "vaccination is the best tool available to prevent bluetongue."
Efforts are underway to increase vaccine availability, ensuring farmers can protect their livestock. The situation is being closely monitored, with a strong emphasis on proactive vaccination strategies to mitigate the disease's spread and impact.
