Giant Black Mamba Found in Tiny Nesting Box
20 Jun
Summary
- Unusual bird behavior alerted sanctuary staff to the snake.
- A 2.1 to 2.2 meter black mamba was discovered inside a nesting box.
- The snake catcher found extraction difficult due to the snake's reluctance to leave.

At a bird sanctuary in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, an ordinary feeding session took an alarming turn when a large black mamba was discovered within a cockatiel nesting box. The cockatiels' peculiar behavior, huddling together and refusing to feed, was the first indicator of trouble for bird rescuer Craig Fry. He investigated the nesting box after noticing movement, realizing a black mamba was present. Snake catcher Dean Boswell was summoned and found it challenging to remove the snake, which measured approximately 2.1 to 2.2 meters (around 7 feet).
This incident underscores the potential dangers lurking in outdoor spaces like nesting boxes, sheds, and roofs, which can attract prey and, consequently, predators like black mambas. Experts emphasize the importance of exercising caution and avoiding reaching blindly into such areas. With shifting habitats and increased human encroachment, encounters between humans and wildlife, including venomous snakes, may become more frequent, reinforcing the need for awareness and safety measures.
