Summary

- Resold furniture will raise funds for the pier's restoration.
- The pier restoration project is slated for completion by summer 2027.

Wood salvaged from the derelict Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare is being creatively repurposed into furniture. This initiative, a partnership between North Somerset Council and Somerset Wood Recycling, aims to generate funds for the pier's extensive restoration.
The grade II listed Birnbeck Pier has been closed for more than three decades due to significant safety concerns. A comprehensive £20 million restoration program is currently underway, with an anticipated completion date of summer 2027. This project breathes new life into materials that cannot be reused in their original form.
Somerset Wood Recycling, a Community Interest Company, is handling the transformation of the reclaimed timber into unique furniture pieces. This partnership, supported by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, also seeks to engage the local community in the preservation of their heritage. Birnbeck Pier is notable as the UK's only pier connecting to an island.
