Birmingham Council Fines Itself Over Clean Air Zone
28 May
Summary
- Council paid over £470,000 in fines.
- Most fines incurred by waste department vehicles.
- One in eight fleet vehicles still non-compliant.

Birmingham City Council has incurred significant costs, paying over £470,000 in fines due to its own fleet vehicles violating Clean Air Zone (CAZ) regulations. These charges have accumulated since the CAZ scheme began in the city centre in 2021.
Despite an ongoing bin strike impacting city services, the majority of the council's non-compliant vehicles are from the waste department. These vehicles triggered 3,262 daily charges and fines totaling £472,253. The council is actively replacing older, non-compliant vehicles and promoting eco-driving practices within its fleet. However, it admits that approximately one in eight vehicles in its operational fleet still does not meet the CAZ's emissions standards.
