A recent study by the University of Otago-Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka in New Zealand focused on scavenging birds, revealing they carry a substantial viral load. Analysis of 31 wild bird species uncovered 118 avian viruses, with 107 being novel species. Notably, some detected viruses had close relatives in regions as far as Russia and the United Arab Emirates.
Scavenging birds, such as gulls and skuas, are highly adaptable and consume various food sources, including waste. This behavior exposes them to a wide range of pathogens. Despite their role in cleaning environments and powerful digestive systems, viruses can still transfer into their bodies. As these birds undertake long migratory flights, they effectively act as vectors for viral dispersal across continents.
New Zealand's isolated yet internationally connected location made it ideal for this research, offering insights into viral migration from East Asia, Australia, and Antarctica. The study's findings are vital for managing and preventing the spread of infectious diseases, including avian influenza. Targeted surveillance of scavenger species could provide early warnings for the presence of dangerous viruses like H5N1.
