Church Conversion Faces Heritage Clash

Proposals to transform the Grade II listed Bingley Independent Methodist Church on Leonard Street into residential apartments have been submitted to Bradford Council. The application, filed in August, acknowledges that the conversion would involve some loss of the building's historic fabric. However, proponents argue it is necessary for the church's long-term preservation.

Despite these claims, a significant concern has been raised by the council's conservation officer, Jon Ackroyd. He has stated that the planned works would inflict 'substantial harm' upon the listed building. Ackroyd further elaborated that the conversion would 'drastically alter' the interior of the historic structure.

The assessment highlights a potential conflict between development aims and heritage conservation. The ongoing deliberation will weigh the proposed apartments against the imperative to protect the architectural integrity and historical significance of the Bingley Independent Methodist Church.
