Summary
- Archaeological dig in Bihar's Madhubani district faces controversy.
- Intach alleges monsoon rains are damaging the historic Balirajgarh site.
- Excavation halted temporarily due to weather concerns.

A significant archaeological excavation at Bihar's historic Balirajgarh site in Madhubani district is currently facing controversy and has been temporarily halted. Intach, through an urgent letter to the ASI director general, has requested an immediate suspension of the ongoing dig due to fears of monsoon rain damage to the ancient site. This excavation, a long-awaited project, began three months ago under the ASI's Patna circle.
Intach's Bihar chapter co-convener, Shiv Kumar Mishra, highlighted that the "ring well," considered a major discovery, has been severely impacted by rain. He stated that the excavation continued during the monsoon season without adequate protective sheds, exposing and potentially damaging artefacts preserved underground for centuries. Concerns have also been raised regarding the impact on crucial layer markings that help determine the age of soil and antiquities.
Responding to the allegations, Sanjay Jha, Rajya Sabha MP, confirmed that the excavation has been stopped for the time being. He emphasized the site's potential to rival discoveries like Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, citing the unearthed drainage and stair systems. A senior ASI official, however, defended current practices, stating that sheds are impractical for vast excavation areas and that all antiquities are protected through layer-by-layer excavation.
