Summary
- Perfume 'Obsession for Men' used for big cat enrichment experiment.
- Big cats showed intense curiosity, prolonged engagement with scented items.
- Experiment suggests potential for wider use of scent-based zoo enrichment.

In an innovative approach to animal welfare, Bannerughatta Biological Park (BBP) in Bengaluru recently explored the use of commercial perfume for big cat enrichment. A week-long pilot program last week introduced scent-based stimulation for captive carnivores, including lions, tigers, leopards, and cheetahs.
The experiment involved spraying Calvin Klein's 'Obsession for Men' on cloth pieces placed within enclosures. This initiative aimed to encourage natural behaviors and maintain the mental acuity of animals in captivity, offering a novel form of enrichment.
Observations revealed significant animal interest, with several big cats exhibiting prolonged engagement, sniffing, licking, and rubbing against the scented objects. Leopards, in particular, showed sustained curiosity for approximately 15 minutes, a duration rarely observed with typical enrichment tools.
BBP officials noted that the perfume's civetone compound, similar to natural scent secretions, made the fragrance biologically relevant to big cats. This encourages investigative and scent-marking behaviors essential to their natural repertoire, highlighting a promising avenue for zoo enrichment programs.
