Bhubaneswar celebrated Local Self-Governance Day by inaugurating the city's inaugural small animal crematorium. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi officially opened the LPG-based facility through a virtual ceremony. This new infrastructure is capable of processing approximately 500 small animal carcasses on a monthly basis, offering a modern solution for pet disposal.
The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) established the crematorium to provide residents with a scientific, hygienic, and environmentally sound method for managing deceased small animals. Officials highlighted the facility's advanced cremation technology, which is designed for eco-friendly carcass disposal, minimizing public health risks and pollution.
Previously, BMC handled an average of 10 stray animal carcasses daily through burial. However, public opposition to burial sites near residential areas led to the decision to adopt incineration for all small animals, excluding cattle. This gas-based method ensures a safe, effective, quick, and environmentally conscious disposal process.
BMC plans to procure specialized vehicles for carcass collection, aiming to improve the efficiency and safety of this essential public service.
