Bhubaneswar Air Quality Recovers to Moderate Levels
24 Feb
Summary
- Bhubaneswar's AQI improved from 'poor' to 'moderate' this year.
- Bhubaneswar's average annual AQI is significantly better than Delhi's.
- Water sprinkling and waste burning bans aided air quality improvements.

Bhubaneswar's air quality has seen a notable recovery, moving from the 'poor' category in November and December of last year to 'moderate' in January and February of this year. This improvement follows a period where PM2.5 levels had reached highs of 207 and 297 respectively.
Officials reported that these improvements are largely due to implemented measures. These include increased frequency of water sprinkling, mist spraying, a ban on open garbage burning, and hotels reducing their reliance on coal-based chullahs. The positive outcomes became evident from mid-January.
In a response to an inquiry, it was confirmed that Bhubaneswar's average annual AQI is substantially better than Delhi's, with figures of 88 compared to Delhi's 223. This indicates a clearer sky and more breathable ambient air in Bhubaneswar.
Further actions by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation involved minimizing construction work and removing construction waste from roadsides. These efforts collectively contributed to the significant reduction in ambient air pollution observed recently.
