Wastewater Poisoning Bhima River: Villages Cry Foul
6 Oct
Summary
- Wastewater from over 50 chemical factories flows into Bhima River.
- Villagers fear for health, livestock, and aquatic life due to pollution.
- Concerns also raised over medical waste dumping yard's foul odor.
Residents of villages surrounding the Kadechur-Badiyal industrial area in Yadgir have raised alarms about severe pollution of the Bhima River. They allege that chemical-laden wastewater from over 50 factories within the industrial zone is being discharged untreated into local drains, which then flow into the river. This ongoing contamination is causing significant anxiety among communities dependent on the river's water.
Concerns extend to the potential impact on people, livestock, and aquatic ecosystems. Sannakeppa, a resident of Joldhadagi, highlighted that the industrial area, established for public benefit, is now causing problems for surrounding villages. Additionally, residents are objecting to a medical waste dumping yard operated by Mother Earth within the industrial area, citing pervasive foul odors that affect local populations.
Social activist Siddappa urged authorities to implement stringent measures to halt the discharge of industrial wastewater into the river. He called for immediate action against improper waste management practices to prevent serious health and environmental consequences for the region's inhabitants and wildlife.
