Berhampur Embraces Eco-Friendly Durga Idol Immersion
22 Oct
Summary
- Four artificial ponds were established by BeMC for eco-friendly idol immersion.
- Puja organizers were urged to use designated ponds to reduce water pollution.
- DJ use was restricted during immersion processions for a quieter celebration.
In Berhampur, the eco-friendly immersion of Durga idols commenced on Wednesday, utilizing four specially constructed artificial ponds. These ponds, located in Ambapua, Gosaninuagaon, Meenakhi Nagar, and near Binayak Acharya College, were set up by the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) following guidelines from the Odisha state pollution control board. The civic body has ensured the temporary ponds are well-equipped with barricades, lighting, and cranes to assist puja organizers.
BeMC commissioner A Sasya Reddy appealed to all puja organizers to exclusively use the designated ponds, refraining from immersing idols in other water bodies. This initiative, designed to curb water pollution, has seen a positive reception from organizers over the years, as noted by BeMC mayor Sanghamitra Dalei. The district administration also imposed a restriction on high-sounding DJ music during the immersion processions. Police had made extensive security arrangements for the nine-day Durga Puja, and no untoward incidents were reported.
