An innovative event called Udhvasana, held last Saturday in Bengaluru's HSR Layout, drew over 200 devotees eager to dispose of sacred images and idols respectfully. Organized by the HSR Citizen Forum, this initiative addresses the common challenge of discarding religious memorabilia in an environmentally conscious manner.
The Udhvasana event, which occurs every three months, aims to prevent sacred items from ending up in landfills. Volunteers collect and meticulously segregate these artefacts into categories such as metal, plastic, and wood. Following this, the materials are sent to factories for recycling or upcycling, transforming them into new products.
Beyond waste diversion, Udhvasana fosters awareness about sustainable consumption. The HSR Citizen Forum encourages devotees to consider more eco-friendly alternatives when purchasing or gifting religious items, highlighting the labor-intensive process of recycling complex materials and promoting mindful purchasing habits.
