Pet Shop Cruelty Exposed in Bengaluru!
2 Mar
Summary
- Many pet shops house animals in cramped, soiled conditions.
- Illegal sale of protected wildlife species reported in shops.
- Approximately 90% of shops lack mandatory registration certificates.

A recent report submitted to the Greater Bengaluru Authority highlights severe welfare violations within the city's pet shops. Animal rights activists documented animals kept in cramped, unsanitary enclosures with inadequate temperature control. These conditions are described as neglectful and compromise the health of animals meant for sale.
Adding to these concerns, several pet shops were found illegally selling animals protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. This poses significant conservation risks. RTI reports indicate that approximately 90% of pet shops in Bengaluru lack mandatory registration certificates and often operate from pavements or makeshift structures without essential facilities like proper ventilation or hygiene.
Activists also noted instances where different species and age groups were housed together, violating pet shop rules and increasing stress and aggression. They urge the public to consider adopting community animals instead of purchasing from such establishments. Wildlife officials have stated that unregistered dealers will face action, including the seizure of protected animals.
