A young, three-year-old leopard at Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) in Bengaluru has died from severe lung collapse and heart conditions. The leopard, rescued as a three-month-old cub in January 2023 from the BRT Tiger Reserve, began showing signs of illness on October 30, including a high temperature and loss of appetite.
Despite initial treatment and a brief period of recovery where it resumed eating, the leopard's condition deteriorated by November 13. It became recumbent and ultimately succumbed on November 19 due to fluid accumulation in its thorax and abdomen, leading to lung collapse and cardiomegaly. Visceral samples have been sent for further examination.
This unfortunate event at BBP comes shortly after the reported death of 31 blackbucks at the Kittur Rani Channamma Zoo in Belagavi district, attributed to a bacterial infection. These recent losses underscore significant health challenges affecting wildlife in conservation areas.
