Bengaluru Tackles Waste Blackspots: New Campaign Launched

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) initiated a month-long 'Freedom from Waste' campaign on August 1, 2026, to address the city's pervasive waste blackspots. This significant cleanliness drive targets 1,616 identified locations, which collectively hold an estimated 22,732 tonnes of accumulated waste. Multiple civic agencies are collaborating to tackle this challenge.

This campaign addresses the symptom rather than the root cause of Bengaluru's waste crisis. Inconsistent waste collection, due to an overburdened auto-tipper system designed for 750 households per vehicle, is a primary driver. This irregularity, coupled with a lack of public bins, encourages dumping in open spaces and vacant plots, creating the blackspots.

Authorities have directed property owners to clear waste from their vacant plots by August 15, with the deadline extended to August 22. Failure to comply means civic agencies will clean the sites and recover costs through property tax. Collected waste is being transported to eight identified land parcels on the city's outskirts.

However, the long-term effectiveness of merely relocating waste remains questionable, as past instances in Mavallipura and Mandur show. Construction and demolition (C&D) waste also contributes significantly to blackspots, often mixed with municipal solid waste, losing its recyclable value. Effective coordination among generators, transporters, and recyclers is crucial.
