Bengaluru Veggies Tainted: Lead & Pesticides Found!
12 Mar
Summary
- Lead and pesticide residues found in vegetables supplied to Bengaluru.
- Sewage treatment plants operate below capacity, contributing to contamination.
- Government to convene legislators' meeting to address food safety concerns.

A recent report by the Central Pollution Control Board has revealed severe contamination, particularly with lead, in vegetables supplied to Bengaluru. These vegetables originate from districts like Kolar and Chickballapur. The contamination includes heavy metals and pesticide residues exceeding permissible limits, prompting concerns about public health. Legislators are set to convene to discuss these findings.
Adding to the environmental concerns, the functioning of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Bengaluru is reportedly inadequate. While the city requires 1,800 MLD capacity, current STPs operate at only 1,200 MLD. This shortfall contributes to the contamination of water bodies and increased pollution from e-waste and construction debris.
In light of these issues, an inter-departmental committee is being considered to establish best practices for food safety. Ministers have acknowledged the need for a coordinated approach, involving departments like Agriculture and Horticulture, to monitor and improve the quality of food consumed by the city's population.
