Ben Nevis Car Park Expansion Faces Green Concerns
11 Jun
Summary
- Existing Ben Nevis car park may expand from 38 to 41 spaces.
- Two new car parks proposed with capacity for 57 and 211 vehicles.
- Concerns raised about wildlife impact and woodland toilet use.

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has proposed significant expansions to the North Face car park, a key access point for Ben Nevis visitors. The existing car park, currently holding approximately 38 spaces, is slated for an increase to 41. Beyond this, two new parking areas are planned, one accommodating up to 57 vehicles and a larger one for 211 cars.
These expansions aim to address persistent roadside parking issues experienced by the 40,000 annual visitors. The plans also earmark an area for a future toilet block. Despite the need for more parking, five objections have been lodged, including one from Fort William Inverlochy and Torlundy Community Council.
The community council expressed worries about inadequate consultation and potential negative impacts on local wildlife. They also raised concerns about visitors using adjacent woodland as a public toilet facility. Highland Council's planning officials have recommended that councillors approve these proposals at an upcoming meeting.
