According to zoo officials, Zola had been showing symptoms of lethargy, reduced appetite, and discomfort late last week. Veterinary teams provided fluids, antibiotics, and supportive care, but Zola was unable to breathe on his own after undergoing further procedures on Wednesday. With Zola's comfort as the top priority, the zoo made the difficult decision to let him go peacefully.
A full necropsy is now underway to determine the cause of Zola's sudden decline. The remaining members of Zola's bachelor troop of gorillas had been preparing to move to the San Antonio Zoo, but those plans are now temporarily on hold as the zoo supports the other gorillas through this heartbreaking loss.
