The beavers, which include two adults introduced in 2023 and their two kits born in 2025, are actively protecting their home. Wildlife coordinator Toby Davies described the event as a territorial defense, with an adult beaver chasing the otter away.
This interaction is significant as otters can pose a potential threat to young beaver kits. The footage demonstrates the beavers' strong protective instincts and their successful establishment within the habitat. The enclosure is also home to other wildlife, including badgers and deer, with the otter possibly entering via a culvert too small for the beavers.
Davies expressed that while interactions between species in the enclosure were known, this direct confrontation provided an "amazing" and valuable insight. It confirms the beavers are thriving and actively safeguarding their territory.
