Bear Trapped in SUV Triggers Car Horn All Night

Widespread drought in the Rocky Mountains is compelling black bears to seek food in residential areas, leading to numerous unusual encounters. In Gold Hill, Colorado, a black bear became trapped in a Toyota SUV, its attempts to escape resulting in the car horn blaring non-stop and the interior being destroyed. This incident is one of many, as reduced natural food supplies push bears into populated zones.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife reports that unsecured garbage bins are the leading cause of a recent spike in bear encounters. Other attractants include pet food left outdoors, bird feeders, and grease traps. While wildlife officials often attempt to relocate problem bears, those that become accustomed to human-provided food sources risk being euthanized.

This increase in human-bear conflict, particularly in areas like Utah and New Mexico, where bear deaths have significantly risen this year, is linked to record low snowpack levels. Scientists suggest human-caused global warming is a contributing factor to these environmental pressures, which also include habitat loss from wildfires. Wildlife authorities reiterate the warning: 'A fed bear is a dead bear,' urging residents to secure potential food sources.
