Bear Opens Package on Doorstep: Wild Encounter Caught on Camera

In a remarkable display of curiosity, a bear was recently recorded on a residential property's Ring doorbell camera investigating a parcel left on the doorstep. The footage shows the unexpected guest carefully prying open the cardboard box with its mouth before sticking its head inside.

Wildlife experts explain that bears are naturally inquisitive and will inspect various objects, odors, and sounds to determine if they are edible or warrant further investigation. Standing on hind legs is a common behavior for bears seeking to enhance their sensory input and is typically a sign of curiosity rather than aggression. While often most active at dawn and dusk, bears may appear at any time and can become nocturnal to avoid human interaction or habituated to people if attractants are readily available.

This incident echoes a separate event in 2023 where a woman in Florida was captured on her Ring camera as a large black bear lunged at her dog when she opened her door. The bear, primarily focused on the dog, performed a bluff charge before retreating when the woman and her pet moved back inside. Authorities noted that in such encounters, it's often a case of mutual surprise between humans, pets, and wildlife.
