Bear Takes Up Residence Under Altadena Home

For nearly a week, an Altadena resident has been sharing his home with an unexpected and large occupant residing in the crawlspace beneath his house. The bear was first observed on Monday of last week, entering the space by easily tearing away a screen. The homeowner only realized the extent of the situation when the bear growled at him while he was near the crawlspace entrance, causing him significant fear.

Following the unsettling encounter, the homeowner contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who advised him to reach out to the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. He made contact on Friday, but due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend, officials informed him that a response from their personnel would not be possible until Monday.

This leaves the homeowner in a precarious situation, unsure of the bear's movements within the crawlspace and awaiting official assistance. The unusual circumstances highlight the challenges of wildlife encounters in residential areas, especially when immediate intervention is hampered by holiday schedules.
