Summary
- A mother bear and cub entered a Hope, B.C. pharmacy.
- The bear was later euthanized due to habituation to humans.
- The orphaned cub was released alone into the wilderness.
A surprising incident occurred in Hope, British Columbia, when a mother bear and her cub entered a local Pharmasave store on a recent Sunday afternoon. Witnesses described the bears as calm, with the mother even exploring the cosmetics and perfume counter before they left the premises and headed toward the Fraser River.
Following the unusual visit, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service determined the mother bear was too habituated to humans and was euthanized. This decision was made due to public safety concerns, as bears that associate people with food pose a risk.
The orphaned cub was released alone into a nearby wilderness area. Experts expressed concern for the cub's survival prospects, noting its young age and lack of body fat, and suggested it would have benefited from rehabilitation at a facility.
