Hundreds of structures across British Columbia have been destroyed by wildfires, with the full extent of losses still undetermined as the peak fire season continues. Experts are advocating for a shift from recommending to mandating FireSmart principles in high-risk areas, emphasizing that inconsistent application leaves communities vulnerable. These principles include essential home maintenance like cleaning gutters and roofs, and strategic landscaping choices, favoring deciduous plants over highly flammable options like juniper and cedar.

Communities that have proactively implemented FireSmart measures have demonstrated success. Logan Lake, B.C., is recognized as Canada's first FireSmart community, crediting its resilience efforts with saving homes during a past fire. Similarly, Jasper, Alberta, has adopted new urban design standards mandating non-combustible materials. However, challenges persist, with some communities rescinding fireproofing bylaws due to cost and delay concerns.

The future of the FireSmart program itself is uncertain, with significant provincial funding having been distributed and remaining funds limited. While the Ministry of Forests' service plan commits to wildfire mitigation including FireSmart, specific future funding remains unconfirmed as the province assesses needs.
