Construction has begun on a new underground storage tank in Barrow, Cumbria, designed to hold more than 1.3 million litres of storm water. This initiative is part of United Utilities' extensive £100 million investment aimed at significantly reducing sewage overflows into the Walney Channel, the Irish Sea, and Morecambe Bay during periods of heavy rainfall.
The project, located at the car park next to the Tally Ho pub, is set for completion in 2028. This marks substantial progress in United Utilities' commitment to enhancing water quality in the region. The company is also planning additional water quality schemes at nine other locations throughout Barrow.
This investment will upgrade 21 storm overflows across nine different sites, contributing to fewer spills and improved water conditions. Work is already in progress at sites on Flass Lane and Ferry, with four more project locations to be announced soon. The current construction benefits from 'permitted development' status, meaning formal planning permission was not required.
