India's Fiery Secret: Active Volcano Awakens

Barren Island, located in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, is home to India's sole active volcano. This uninhabited island presents a striking landscape of volcanic slopes against the deep blue Andaman Sea.

First documented eruption was in 1787, with subsequent activity in 1991, and ongoing eruptions reported as of late 2025. While the recent volcanic activity has been moderate, it serves as a potent reminder of the island's volatile nature.

Access to Barren Island is strictly controlled; visitors can view the volcano from surrounding waters via cruises or private charters but are forbidden from disembarking. This policy ensures visitor safety and protects the island's fragile ecosystem.

The prime visiting season is from November to April, when sea conditions are calmest, offering optimal visibility for sightseeing and diving. Outside this period, monsoon weather can impede travel and viewing opportunities.

Beyond volcano observation, the surrounding waters are renowned for scuba diving, attracting large pelagic fish and marine life. Snorkeling also offers a chance to explore vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish.

Despite its name, Barren Island supports resilient vegetation and a thriving marine ecosystem, including healthy coral reefs and diverse species, with even feral goats documented surviving the terrain.
