Bangladesh Bets Big: 250 Million Trees for Greener Future

Bangladesh is launching a significant environmental program, aiming to plant 250 million trees across the nation within five years. This extensive initiative seeks to enhance the country's green coverage, fulfill an election pledge, and advance climate and biodiversity goals. The program unites various government ministries and agencies, including agriculture, education, and the Bangladesh Army. Each entity will manage specific planting quotas, funded through existing budgets. Non-governmental organizations are also enlisted to contribute to this widespread public-private effort. A dedicated task force, led by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, will oversee and monitor the initiative using an online dashboard for real-time tracking of planting progress, species, and locations. One hundred million trees are designated for coastal regions to restore mangrove forests and protect against erosion. Fifty million saplings will go to hill and sal forests, while urban areas will receive 12.5 million to combat heat stress and pollution. Emphasis is placed on planting native species like keora in coastal zones and garjan in hill forests. This approach moves away from past practices of planting exotics such as eucalyptus, which proved detrimental to local ecosystems. The project faces challenges, including assessing suitable plant species for each zone, ensuring the quality of saplings from nurseries, and providing essential post-planting care like watering and protection. Bangladesh's commitment aligns with international pledges, including restoring 15% of degraded ecosystems by 2030 under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and its National Adaptation Plan. The success of this ambitious tree-planting drive will significantly influence the nation's ecological health and climate resilience.
